MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

To inspect, monitor, review and enforce compliance to applicable radiation safety legislation, regulations and directives, including hazardous materials control, emergency preparedness, radiological safety, accident prevention and other SHERQ programs and policies in order to ensure a safe workplace and environment.


Key Performance Areas:

  • Control all radiation protection activities at the Husab Mine, including coordination of Radiation Officers (ROs) and Radiation Safety Assistants (RSA).
  • Develop radiation-relevant work procedures and workplace instructions.
  • Ensure quality assurance of all radiation protection activities at the mine site.
  • Liaise and correspond with Swakop Uranium and the National Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA).
  • Apply for and maintain all radiation-related permits and licenses.
  • Prepare internal and external reports on radiation protection matters.
  • Ensure radiation monitoring equipment remains fully operational, calibrated, and maintained according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Liaise with Environmental Section on public and environmental radiation protection matters.
  • Prepare and submit annual reports to NRPA on implementation of the Radiation Management Plan (RMP).
  • Review and update the Radiation Management Plan (RMP) as required.
  • Conduct radiation surveys, quality assurance tests, and calibration of monitoring equipment.
  • Advise on safe transport of radioactive materials in line with IAEA transport and waste disposal standards.
  • Inspect storage sites for radioactive materials and monitor radiation levels regularly.
  • Monitor workplace contamination and maintain accurate records of all radiation safety checks.

Requirements and experience:

  • B.Sc. Degree in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Geophysics, Geology, or Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Radiation Science.
  • Uranium Institute approved Radiation Safety Officer Certification (RSO3).
  • Minimum 6 years’ relevant experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Valid Code B/BE Driver’s License.
